After a car accident, your health and welfare are your and our top priority. There is no escaping the fact, however, that medical care in our country is expensive and potentially overwhelming if you do not have a means to pay for the treatment. Medical bills have quickly become the primary reason for personal bankruptcies in this country.[i]
Realize that the other driver’s insurance company will not pay your medical bills on an ongoing basis after the car accident. The adjusters may contact you or your family and promise to pay your medical bills but be careful! The other driver’s insurance company will require you to sign a settlement agreement and accept a lowball offer before it will pay any outstanding medical bills. If you are still in treatment, that is no time to be discussing settlement or monetary compensation. Look to your own insurance companies, including your health insurance, first.
All insurance companies in Washington are required to offer customers a type of insurance called Personal Injury Protection, or PIP. PIP coverage allows you to have your medical bills paid by your car insurance after a car accident. The insurance, however, is optional and many people mistakenly decline the insurance. If you are reading this and have not added PIP to your car insurance, call your insurance company now. For only a few dollars per month, you can make sure that your medical bills are paid if you are in a car accident, regardless of whether you or someone else cause the accident.
Most PIP policies provide for either $10,000 or $35,000 in coverage. If you suffer severe injuries and requires hospitalization or surgery, you will quickly run through the PIP coverage. You will then need to turn to whatever health insurance you have available, such as an employer provided health plan or government provided coverage (such as Medicare, Medicaid or Community Health Plan of Washington/Molina).
